The Myrtle Avenue Business Improvement District spans a two mile stretch from Flatbush to Classon avenue in the Fort Green and Clinton Hill neighborhoods of Brooklyn.
During the pandemic, the BID's team focused on supporting merchants reach residents through a number of innovative campaigns, including a complete redesign of the holiday promotional materials. Executive Director Chad Purkey asked us to help realize his vision of a newsprint publications with "stories" highlighting the products and services shoppers might need during the festive season.
We took a holistic approach and suggested using a custom illustration as the cornerstone. Over the next four years, our all-women team worked with four lady illustrators, all local to Brooklyn, and four female graphic designer to produce the holiday mailer, signage and banners, and social media graphics. We updated the format of the mailer after two years to keep it fresh.
Every year, it was sent to 40,000 households, providing exposure for small business owners (more than 50% of whom are people of color and more than 30% are women) during an incredibly difficult time.
